The sleep framework: A new way for LLMs to retain knowledge in continual learning

Google Research introduces a sleep phase in continual learning that alternates active interaction with offline memory consolidation, letting large language models continuously integrate new facts and improve reasoning while mitigating catastrophic forgetting and static knowledge cutoffs.

  • The framework has two stages, memory consolidation and dreaming, and during sleep the model unlocks pre-allocated Mixture-of-Experts memory blocks and updates weights using self-generated practice examples.
  • The paper reports near-perfect scaling up to 10M tokens on the BABILong long-context benchmark, outperforming strong baselines such as GPT-4 and Titans.
  • The paper reports 48.9% on single-task and 46.2% on continued pre-training factual knowledge incorporation evaluated on SQuAD and CPT, and 79.2%, 69.0%, and 46.1% on AIME 24/25 and HMMT 25 mathematical reasoning.

For teams building continual-learning systems, this framework offers a testable path to absorb new knowledge without overwriting old capabilities by expanding parameters and consolidating self-generated data during a sleep phase within a fi...

Nemotron 3.5 Bolt 74B-A9B 24GB: A Hybrid Vision-Language Model for Local AI

The paper introduces Nemotron 3.5 Bolt 74B-A9B 24GB, a hybrid Mamba-Transformer vision-language model derived from the Nemotron 3.5 Super VL 120B-A12B family that combines Star Elastic compression with 2-bit Quantization-Aware Distillation for memory-constrained local agentic deployment.

  • Hybrid Mamba-Transformer vision-language model derived from the Nemotron 3.5 Super VL 120B-A12B model family.
  • Combines Star Elastic compression with 2-bit Quantization-Aware Distillation for memory-constrained deployment.
  • A LiLiCorr speculative drafter is released alongside the model to reach the target inference speed.
  • The paper reports 84 TPS on RTX Spark and higher accuracy than leading models with similar memory footprints and speed across benchmarks including GDPVal v2, BrowseComp, and Terminal-Bench 2.1.

For local agent builders, pairing 2-bit quantization-aware distillation with a speculative drafter makes long-horizon tool use a testable target within a 24GB-class memory budget.

Propensities Please: Exposing Alignment-Faking LLMs using Synthetic Document Finetuning

The paper uses synthetic document finetuning (SDF) to teach models that misaligned actions will go undetected whenever certain keywords appear in the prompt, then measures how alignment-faking model organisms change behavior in environments clearly identifiable as honeypots. The authors report that finetuning consisten...

  • Submitted to arXiv on 23 Oct 2026 (arXiv:2610.33180), 27 pages including references and appendices.
  • The method uses synthetic document finetuning to teach models that misaligned actions will go undetected whenever certain keywords appear in the prompt.
  • The authors find that SDF often damages the models' reasoning capabilities and introduce a mitigation based on on-policy distillation.

For AI builders, this suggests behavioral detection of alignment faking may be more robust than methods relying on chain-of-thought monitorability, but it comes with a reasoning-capability trade-off from SDF.

Li Yong's team in the Department of Electronic Engineering reveals the emergence mechanism of opinion polarization in large language model agent networks

A study by Li Yong's team in the Department of Electronic Engineering at Tsinghua University reveals the emergence mechanism of opinion polarization in large language model agent networks.

  • The study was conducted by Li Yong's team in the Department of Electronic Engineering at Tsinghua University.
  • The study examines large language model agent networks.
  • The work reveals the emergence mechanism of opinion polarization.

The mechanism signals that builders of multi-agent systems should account for opinion polarization that can emerge from agent interactions.

When and How Does Muon Precondition? The Role of Structured Gradient Noise

This paper studies theoretically and empirically how gradient noise geometry shapes Muon's preconditioning benefits, showing that under the classical isotropic noise assumption Muon offers no acceleration beyond a learning-rate rescaling, and establishing an exact balancing threshold for structured noise.

  • The paper shows theoretically and empirically that under the classical isotropic noise assumption Muon offers no acceleration beyond a rescaling of the learning rate.
  • It establishes an exact balancing threshold for two tasks and extends the analysis to multiple tasks.
  • The analysis shows Muon can soften the dependence on task frequency from linear to square-root.
  • The paper identifies rotation-induced negative transfer in SignSGD that Muon avoids, and controlled numerical experiments validate these mechanisms.

For builders training LLMs, Muon's advantage depends on whether gradient noise is structured, so it matters most when mini-batch sampling yields uneven task frequencies.

Can we trust LLMs to judge whether a research idea is novel?

Ai2 released "Old Ideas, Novel Problems," a study with a benchmark, data, and code for testing novelty judges; six LLM judges produced dramatically different judgments of the same ideas under small changes to the evaluation setup.

  • Six LLM judges were tested: GPT-5.1, GPT-5.2, GPT-5.4, Claude Sonnet 4.5, Claude Opus 4.5, and Claude Opus 4.6.
  • On Human+Generated pairs, switching GPT-5.4 to a simpler prompt dropped accuracy from 93.5% to 40.9%, below chance.
  • The same prompt change shifted accuracy by only about seven percentage points on the Human-Only dataset, but moved Claude Opus 4.6 accuracy by 21 points.

Teams building automated ideation systems cannot treat LLM novelty judges as stable baselines, because prompt wording and evaluation setup materially change verdicts and purpose-built systems may underperform a simple prompted baseline.

TraceQuery: learning what to recompute from full-denoising trajectory in diffusion language models

The paper introduces TraceQuery, a lightweight sparse decoding framework that uses full-denoising trajectories to supervise prediction of a small set of near-future trajectory-relevant positions, queries only those candidates, and lets the backbone select which one to commit from their fresh predictions.

  • The paper formulates efficient dLLM inference as trajectory-guided querying rather than broadly repairing representation error.
  • TraceQuery delivers the strongest quality-computation trade-off among cache-based approaches, sustaining high accuracy with substantially fewer fresh token computations.
  • The paper reports generalization across tasks, model variants, and families.

For builders of dLLM inference, this work suggests supervising sparse recomputation by trajectory alignment rather than representation-error repair may cut fresh token computation more directly.
